Jamil Zaki, Ph.D., uses tools from psychology and neuroscience to help you understand how empathy works. As a professor of Psychology at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab, he explains how kindness is a learnable skill. You can use it in your life more often.
“Kindness is, obviously, I think the most important for us as a collective,” Jamil says. “We need to cooperate, we need to work together, and that’s whether you’re in a family or a company or a culture.”
Jamil’s kindness research includes empathy and compassion to form a triad. “Kindness is a behavior that benefits another person,” he explains. Scientists view empathy like a big umbrella term for emotional connection and then compassion as one of the components of emotional connectedness to others.

“One of the most powerful ways to, let’s say, create kindness in a human being is to teach empathy,” Leon says. “Because we can really only experience our own experiences, so the use of empathy is a very profound tool to inspire people to treat others with dignity.”
